Yes, I agree with the first post- Hirigana and Katakana. Then start out with some basic words you can get from a text book, don't try anything fancy just study how to use the particles wa (using the hirigana for ha tho), ga, no, and o (wo). Focus on sentences such as how to say "I like this - kore ga suki desu" etc. these are good places to start. Keep in mind that while English is SVO (Subject -Verb-Object) Japanese is SOV.
