I would start with the 'Let's Lean Japanese' video course.
Let’s Learn Japanese Basic: Yan and the Japanese People
You can download those, look for them on google.
They are entertaining as well.

Yes, I agree with the first post- Hirigana and Katakana. Then start out with some basic words you can get from a text book, don't try anything fancy just study how to use the particles wa (using the hirigana for ha tho), ga, no, and o (wo). Focus on sentences such as how to say "I like this - kore ga suki desu" etc. these are good places to start. Keep in mind that while English is SVO (Subject -Verb-Object) Japanese is SOV. Hope this helps.

See if you can find a part time Japanese class near to where you live to join. That's how I started learning Japanese.

There's quite a lof of stuff on the net about learning Japanese which is useful as well.
